FRICTION (2012-2013)
These works, as "Surface Installations", recollect my personal memory of my time living on an atoll in the Marshall Islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, while I am still trying to understand those experiences. It was an intimate physical relationship with the ocean and a sense of submersion in an almost surreal geography. Standing between ocean and sky on a disappearing, tiny string of land, everyday was a contrast of monotony and epic changes in nature. In the mean time, the history and the social challenges that the place and its landscape are facing evoke infinite sadness.
Each mark is made by a small piece of paper touching water and ink, allowing them to spread their own ways through the fibre, forming random stains. These paper slices are then carefully organized into elaborate surface installations. Whilst each work functions as one surface, each small piece of paper also exists as a miniature landscape.
