RECYCLING HISTORY (2016)
This sculpture is composed with 16 pieces of found World War II relics, mortar fins detached from previously highly explosive bombs. Each of them is painted, in one fraction of the hexagon-star shape, a colour such as pink, baby blue, creamy yellow, lime green or light purple, one that reminds us of a childish palette. They are hung with clear fishing lines diagonally across the height of the opening threshold between the two rooms in the gallery. A viewer walking from the first room to the second room in the gallery has to pass through the triangular opening underneath the mortar fins.
In some remote and underdevelopped islands of the Pacific Ocean, I have frequently encountered European, American or Japanese military remains from the wars. Even though the local islanders have not participated in the World War I or World War II, their home lands have been used as military bases. Due to a lack of proper post-war cleanup, many of these military items, some as big as whole airplanes or tanks, are left to rust on these tropical beaches. Local children sometimes improvise with them, and they become part of the coastline and everyday objects.
